As part of the series of project events organised by BIOMETHAVERSE (see Milan WorkshopUppsala Workshop, Athens Workshop), a workshop on biomethane brought together industry experts and stakeholders to discuss the role of biomethane in advancing a circular economy, promoting energy independence, and creating green jobs. The event, hosted by LEITAT on 29 November 2024 in Barcelona, featured insightful presentations and discussions on the latest developments in renewable gases and hydrogen technologies.

The workshop was designed to provide a comprehensive overview of BIOMETHAVERSE’s innovative production pathways, placing the project’s technological advancements within the current European biomethane production and regulatory landscape. Moreover, a spotlight was on biomethane developments in Spain. The debate and exchange of ideas on the topic was highly engaging, with over 35 attendees, including biogas/biomethane experts, stakeholders and project partners.

Anna Venturini (EBA) presented the New European Institutional Cycle, providing figures on biomethane today, insights on future developments towards 2040 and expectations for the 2024-2029 period, following theEU Parliament elections last June 2024 and the new elected EC Commission.

Stefano Proietti (ISINNOVA) shared an overview of the BIOMETHAVERSE project, highlighting its goals and progress, with a dedicated focus on replicability analysis and planning decision guidance.

Gaspard Bouteau (ENGIE), Karin Berg (RISE), Reik Ellmann and Daniel Dzofou Ngoumelah (DBFZ), Dimitris Kourkoumpas (CERTH) and Ifigeneia Grigoriadou (BLAG), and Samuele Vito (CAP) presented the pilot sites in France, Sweden, Ukraine, Greece, and Italy, respectively, each presenting unique approaches and technologies being implemented in their regions.

After an introduction from David Fernandez (AEBIG – Spanish Biogas Association) on the situation in Spain, and a presentation from Alejandra Cordova (CETAQUA) on the European project SEMPRE-BIO, the workshop concluded with a round table discussion addressing the state of the art of the biomethane market and policy framework in Spain. The round table, moderated by Eduard Borràs (LEITAT), hosted local biogas/biometane actors: David Fernández (AEBIG – Spanish Biogas Association), Anna Ayats (Consorci Gestió dels Residus del Vallès Oriental), Daniele Molognoni (LEITAT), Pilar Icaran (Equipo de Biometano, Nortegas) and Emma Pipó Ollé  (Inveniam Group).

The panelists addressed the different challenges and opportunities existing in Spain, namely discussing economic incentives and policy developments, social acceptability, research directions, role of public administration and of private sector.
